Bangladesh needed to bring all their experience and count on lady luck to avoid a defeat against Afghanistan in the first one-day international. The Bangla Tigers will now target a much more assured performance when the 3rd ODI takes centre-stage in Dhaka.

While a lot of work remains to be done in the Test match format, when it comes to limited-overs cricket, Bangladesh are a team capable of beating any side in the world, on their day. However, against Afghanistan, who seem to be improving with every game, it looked like Bangladesh would be the ones at the receiving end of an upset, before Shakib al Hasan showed why he is such a great all-rounder by bowling under pressure with tremendous efficiency.

Had the Afghanistan team been more experienced, in terms of big match play and handling the pressure situations against stronger opposition, they would have been the ones to take a 1-0 lead in the series, but thanks to their world-class all-rounder, Bangladesh eventually came away with a seven-run win.

Bangladesh will be hoping its long break from international cricket does not affect its performance when it begins the three-match One-Day International series against Afghanistan in Dhaka on Sunday (September 25).

The home side last played an international match during the ICC World Twenty20 in India in April this year and has played no ODIs since hosting Zimbabwe in November last year.

During the Bangladesh Liberation War, the Kingdom of Afghanistan provided a critical safe passage to Bengali civilians based in West Pakistan. The People’s Democratic Party of Afghanistan called for the swift recognition of the newly established state.

In 2010, Former US Special Envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke requested Bangladesh to send combat troops to Afghanistan. Few days later, SITE intelligence group published a report headlined “Afghan Taliban reacts to US requesting troops from Bangladesh” where the Taliban called for rejecting the US request. Two days later, a press conference by the US embassy in Dhaka restated the request saying, “The United States has intensified its discussion on Bangladesh’s engagement in Afghanistan for global peace and stability,”. However, there was a general consensus among the politicians of different political parties as well as the civil society members that Bangladesh should not send its troops to Afghanistan without the UN mandate. Later, the government of Bangladesh declared that Bangladesh won’t send any troops to Afghanistan but offered assistance on the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the war ravaged country.
