Sabbir Rahman and Mashrafe Mortaza gave a nasty send-off to Jos Buttler, provoking the stand-in English skipper. Later, Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes got into an altercation with Tamim Iqbal while shaking hands. Things turned quite nasty towards the end of the second One-Day International (ODI) in Dhaka, scenes that don’t quite merit a place in a sport that prides itself in being called the ‘gentleman’s game’.

Thus, as the rain threatens to disrupt the third ODI in Chittagong, it is only the brokers of peace who will be happy knowing the two teams will have ample time to cool off before they contest on the cricket field again. But for cricket, the news is quite a dampener. There couldn’t have been a worse anti-climax for a series that has been so intensely contested and poised. However, there have been cruel endings to the game, and this is set to be no different.

Chittagong witnessed heavy showers on Tuesday (October 11), and the trend is expected to continue on Wednesday – the day of the third ODI between Bangladesh and England – with more thunderstorms forecast. Play seems highly unlikely. To make matters worse, as per reports, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has declined the offer of playing the third ODI on a reserve day. However, if a match, is at all possible, expect it to be a shortened affair. Maybe even 20-over a side.

Bangladesh seamers, led by skipper Mashrafe Mortaza, have done well in the slow conditions of Dhaka. The hosts are likely to bank on them to deliver at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium. Thus, left-arm spinner Taijul Islam, who has been included in the squad for the final match, replacing Mosharraf Hossain, may not find a place in the Playing XI. The all-round trio of Shakib Al Hasan, Nasir Hossain and Mosaddek Hossain Saikat will have to shoulder the job of tying up the English batsmen with spin.

England have a deep batting order with Jake Ball coming in at No. 11. However, barring Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler, and Ben Duckett to an extent, the England batsmen have failed to get going in the series so far. In the bowling department, Adil Rashid and Jake Ball have been the only ones so far to have enjoyed considerable success so far.

But, with the series well-poised, pot shots taken and arguments done, both teams would be eager to have the last laugh.

When: Bangladesh vs England, 3rd ODI – 2:30 PM local time (2:00 PM IST)
Where: Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chittagong
What to expect: It has been raining heavily for a couple of days. Forecast is for heavy rains and thunderstorms on the match day

Team News:

Bangladesh are unlikely to tinker with their winning combination despite the inclusion of Taijul in the squad. England might look at bringing in Sam Billings, considering James Vince’s back-to-back failures.

Did you know:

6: Since losing the three-match ODI series against India in June 2014, Bangladesh have been undefeated at home, securing six series victories, including wins against Pakistan, India and South Africa.

38: The number of runs Tamim Iqbal requires to reach the landmark of 5000 ODI runs. In case he reaches the milestone, he will become the first Bangladesh batsman to do so.

What they said:

“I think the most disappointing thing was that we batted a little bit like the old England for the first time in a couple of years. We would rather lose the game playing the way we played in the last two years” – Moeen Ali, England all-rounder.

“Actually the discussion and criticism has not touched me at all. I don’t even know what happened. Sabbir and I got fined but I have not been thinking about these things. I have never thought about these things in my career” – Mashrafe Mortaza, Bangladesh captain
